Seasons Cards for California Heritage Research Project

Born from a powerful collaboration between Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribal Elder Virginia β€œGinger” Covert (1945 - 2024) and artist Sophie Wood Brinker through CHIRP’s Visibility Through Art initiative, this series of art postcards highlights the natural rhythms and teachings of the seasons - through the eyes of Nisenan Culture and wisdom.

Guided by Ginger’s vision and voice, each card features a unique pairing of animal and landscape through the seasons, illustrated with care and reverence by Sophie. Ginger reflected,

β€œEverything we need is provided by nature. Animals are the teachersβ€”they show us how to live, what to eat, and even how to mourn. The lessons are all around us, but it’s up to us to recognize them. Each season provides its own time for everything.”

Santa Cruz County contains a variety of habitats, from the depths of the Monterey Bay to the peaks of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The unique geology and Mediterranean climate create a rich environment for a wide array of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to this region".
